10 Kids Books That Teach Emotional Intelligence

What exactly is Emotional Intelligence or EQ?

Simply defined, it's the ability to reflect on and regulate self to maintain good relations with one's self and others. The goal is inner peace and harmonious living.

1. Circle of Friends

An interesting little book about friends getting together and helping to achieve one huge task. Along the way some friends take time out to empathize and encourage each other which ultimately leads to them successfully achieving the task.

Themes: Empathy, Self Awareness & Conflict Resolution

2. Enemy Pie
Really such a clever book. At first I was worried about the strong harsh start to the story but quickly the boy's father intervenes with his secret recipe for enemy pie which basically is a recipe for empathy and turning an enemy into a friend.

Themes: Kindness, Self Reflection, Conflict Resolution

3. Every Little Thing
I really like the spin on this from song to story and the strong elements of nature and community. This is definitely the anti - worry kids book that every child needs to read. Key messages like "Everyone can make a mistake they sayayay" and "Don't worry about a thing" are key messages you want your child to take with them throughout life.

Themes: Empathy, Self Soothing

Bonus: A similar book is One Love. No more spoilers, just read it or sing it or listen to me read and sing it on The Tot Tutor YouTube channel.

Themes: Family, Community & Mindfulness

4. Giraffes Can't Dance

The kids book about self reflection, weaknesses and reframing or debunking self limiting beliefs. Spoiler: The Giraffe who was fearing and dreading a big dance event because he thought he couldn't dance turned out to be the best dancer. All he needed was some encouragement to unearth his talent.

Themes: Self Confidence & Glass Half Full

5. Giraffe Problems

A story about a Giraffe who despised his neck only to realize what an advantage his neck was all along.

Themes: Self Acceptance, Self Awareness

6. How Do Dinosaurs Play With Their Friends?

The anti selfishness kids book and this story does it so well. It's literally just a series of rhetorical questions that gets kids thinking about the right way to treat a friend.

Themes: Friendship, Sharing, Caring etc.

7. Liam Takes a Stand

The poster book for overcoming sibling rivalry and sibling conflict and it took the youngest 'taking a stand' (it's a major pun in the story) for the older brothers to realize how badly they treated their younger sibling.

Themes: Forgivenes, Empathy, Sibling Rivalry & Conflict Resolution etc.

8. Little Monkey Calms Down

Nobody would want to deal with what little monkey had to deal with...in the words of the infamous song "You would cry too if it happened to you." The gem in the story is how monkey calms  himself and is able to overcome. Such a powerful little book about self mastery.

Themes: Mindfulness, Self Soothing

9. The Mixed Up Chameleon

In true chameleon form, the main character tries to be everyone but himself and literally a little bit of everyone but himself...till it just made no sense. Very comical but it drives home the point home - be yourself because everyone else is taken.

Theme: Self Acceptance

10. What A Wonderful World

The final book on the list is a true celebration of individual and community and how all of creation makes the world beautiful. Such a lovely message  and you can hear me read it over on The Tot Tutor Channel
