Science For Kids
Rainbow Experiment |
Science is the study of matter and energy and the interactions between them. Chemistry and physics are specializations of physical science. Chemistry tends to focus on the properties of substances and the interactions between different types of matter, particularly reactions that involve electrons. Physics tends to focus more on the nuclear part of the atom, as well as the subatomic realm. Really, they are two sides of the same coin. Biology is the study of organisms and life in general.
Science Studies:
- the structure and behavior of atoms (elements)
- the composition and properties of compounds
- the reactions between substances with their accompanying energy exchange
- the laws that unite these phenomena into a comprehensive system.
Why Should Little Kids Study Science?
Understanding science helps them to understand the world around them. Cooking is science. Everything you can touch or taste or smell has special properties and is the stuff of science. When you study science, you come to understand a bit about how things work.
Science isn't secret knowledge, useless to anyone but a scientist. It's the explanation for everyday things, like why laundry detergent works better in hot water or how baking soda and vinegar works. If you know some science, you can make educated choices about everyday products that you use.

What Do Scientists Do?
Whatever they want. Some scientists work in a lab, in a research environment, asking questions and testing hypotheses with experiments. Other scientists may work on a computer developing theories or models or predicting reactions. Some scientists do field work. Others contribute advice on science projects. Some scientists write. Some scientists teach. The career options are plentiful.

How To Make Science Part of Your Child's Life?
1. Encourage their natural curiosity! Who What, When. Answer their questions, ask them follow up questions and find answers to questions together.
2. Give them space to experiment. whether indoors, at bath time or outside (my favorite) 😅. My kids really like playing in dirt...dirt is outside in the mess acceptable zone. #Win You can also have them help with controlled experiments like cooking, juicing and baking or whatever you can research or pre prepare.
3. Watch educational Science/STEM based shows. If they're watching shows on the TV or tablets anyway include science programming. Shows like Emily's Wonder Lab on Netflix, Ada Twist and free content put out by various Science Centres on their websites.
